NNEWI: A CHILD OF PROPHECY AND AFRICA'S POSTER CHILD FOR SUCCESS
One of the things that fascinates me about the bible is the way GOD singles out the nation of Israel among other nations and how he always singles out an individual in a family. It rattles and puzzles me at times why GOD deliberately chooses some people for greater
heights even before they are born. Think of Jacob, think of Jeremiah, think of Jesus Christ, think of Moses, think of David. This deliberate act of GOD is what gives me the assurance that despite the several beautiful religions in the world, GOD has singled out a particular religion to be His favourite. I do not know which religion it is, however, I know that there are several towns in Nigeria nay Africa but there is one particular town that has been singled out by the Creator. That town is Nnewi and my job here is to prove it to you.
Before Nnewi was born, his father Ikenga went to enquire from the famous Arochukwu deity. The deity prophesied that Nnewi shall be a great king and the father of a great town. True to the prophecy Nnewi became a king, eclipsed and swallowed as a town his elder brother Isu. He also grew mighty and dwarfed his other brothers, Oraifite and Ichi. Nnewi did not just stop there, today she is the greatest town out of her ancestral home, Nri Kingdom. Presently, Nnewi is the town that typifies the Biafran spirit of resourcefulness and self reliance.
As a town, Nnewi has produced many firsts: the first African billionaire - Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu , the first female governor in Nigeria - Dame Virgy Etiaba, the first African car manufacturer - Innocent Chukwuma, the first black Bishop East of the Niger - Bishop L.M Uzodike, the first Igbo Senate President - Dr. Akwaeke Abyssinia Nwafor Orizu, the first and only president of the failed Republic of Biafra - Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the first town to have produced more millionaires in Nigeria, the first and only town that is a local government of its own in the whole of Ana-mbara ad infinitum.
There is no iota of doubt that Nnewi has been richly blessed by the Creator. In the whole of Igbo land the only town that is not a state capital that you can compare with Nnewi is only Onitsha and Aba. But before you make such comparison there is need to ask yourself who developed those towns? Ndi Nnewi are in the habit of developing every town they settle in as if it is there own, little wonder many property in Onitsha are owned by Ndi Nnewi. The early families that developed Aba were the Onyemelukwe's of Okpuno Nnewichi. Ndi Nnewi were among the early developers of Aba before other people from several parts of Igbo land cashed in. Presently, the biggest factory in Enugu capital is owned by an Nnewi man while several Ndi Nnewi are owners of property in Enugu.
I can inundate you with things owned by Onye Nnewi that will never occur to you. For example, the popular Roban stores is from Nnewi, Filmhouse cinema that is permeating the whole of Nigeria is owned by an Nnewi man, the Governor, the popular political TV drama, is produced by the lead actress, Carolyn Chikezie who is from Nnewi. Joe Igbokwe, the Igbo APC publicity secretary in Lagos state is from Nnewi. Geneivive Nnaji's major business partners the Onwugbenu sisters are from Nnewi. The list continues.
To show how important and strategic Nnewi is, during the Nigerian - Biafran war, the Nigerian army tried all they could to capture this little town believing that once they do the war will be over, but they couldn't. Every attempt made to capture it resulted in heavy casualty from the drowning of Nigerian soldiers at Onitsha to the Abagana miracle where thousands of dangerous ammunition belonging to the Nigerian army was wiped in seconds by a dangerous Ogbunigwe. However, when they finally got to Nnewi, the war was over. That's to show you how sacred it is, despite Nnewi's close proximity to Onitsha and Asaba, towns that were occupied early by the Nigerian army very early into the war, yet it took the Nigerian army till the end of the war to gain access into the sacred town of Anaedo.
Edo is a deity but it means gold in Igbo. No doubts, the pockets of Ndi Nnewi are filled with gold. Mind you not stolen golds but legitimately acquired wealth. Despite all the rumours about money rituals attributed to Ndi Nnewi yet the town probably remain the only town where fraudsters and 419ners are not openly recognised or celebrated in Igbo town. You can never point one Onye Nnewi who is a fraudster that is openly celebrated by his community. Ndi Nnewi are not known for drug pushing, this does not mean that some of her children do not peddle drugs, they do because there will always be a Judas in every twelve. However, the bulk of Ndi Nnewi are hardworking, innovative and foresighted businessmen. Their breath taking success is an insignia of their endorsement by GOD.
The blessings of Nnewi is upon Ndi Nnewi and also upon the land. The good Lord has blessed Ndi Nnewi with inexplicable wisdom and good luck. However, it seems Ndi Nnewi are yet to understand why they seem to be most blessed amongst others. It seems they are yet to understand the price that comes with being singled out by the Creator. Go through the history of the human race, every time a particular person or a nation has been singled out there is one major reason why it is so. It is simply to lead. From Joshua to Moses to David to Jesus to Mohammed to Gandhi to Israel to America. The job of those people and these nations were and are to lead others into their Canaan. You might hate it or argue with it, the fact remains that there are people who have been singled out to lead and until they lead or make a move people who are supposed to follow will remain in Egypt.
The truth remains that in Africa, Nigeria has been called to lead. The fact that Nigeria is still slumbering cannot diminish this fact. In Nigeria, the Igbos have been called to show the way, the fact that they are the most disorganised lot presently cannot diminish this fact. In Igbo land, Nnewi has been chosen to lead the pack, the fact they are more preoccupied with wanton material acquisition presently cannot diminish this sacred truth.
Please before I am misconstrued for promoting race or tribal superiority like Hitler let me clarify. There is a wall of difference between leading and lording it over others. Leading is the humble act of pointing and showing the right way to fellow travellers it is not the arrogant act of it is either my way or the highway. It is not the thinking you are better and more special than others. No, leading is simply showing and living the right way just like Jesus Christ, Joshua and Moses carefully demonstrated.
In conclusion, for Nnewi to take up the onerous task that nature and her creator have bestowed upon her, some key things need to be put in place as a matter of urgency. These things are: Business school, School of Research and Technology, School of Leadership, Science Institute, a Mathematical Institute, School of Arts, Fashion and Culture and a Town Planning Committee. Nnewi can never lead or assume its leadership role until these things are in place and I hope we know the implications of such delay?
Tobe Osigwe.
Am from this town too and its a great place to be. My own article coming soon whatchout
